Week Two Reading: Ch. 8-17

**This week you will need to post one more comment on the Week One board, along with the Week Two requirements. Please return to the comment section in Week One and read all of the comments below your last post. I have listed directions at the end for you. Happy Blogging!

Questions for Week Two:

  • Ida B comments that the phrase "It's nothing" usually means there's more than plenty to worry about, but not too much that can be done. What situation is she referring to within her family? Make a connection to another similar situation.
  • Describe the mood in Ida B's house after Mama's treatments. Give examples from the book to support your thoughts.
  • Ida B speaks of her heart hardening. What causes this to happen to her? Compare this to a character in another novel you have read.
  • Describe how Ida B's experience at school is different this time around. What is her reaction this time?
  • Explain what happened to the edge of the Applewood land. Make a prediction about what the future will bring with this new change.

  1. Dear Bloggers,
When Ida B says that "it's nothing" means its something that nothing can be done about, she is referring to when her dad says that he will make an appointment. We later find out that Ida B's mother has cancer, that's why her dad made an appointment. Sometimes when things like that happen, I get a little scared too, but mostly it's a false alarm, and really is "nothing." I am glad that nothing too serious has ever happened to my family like cancer, but a couple of years ago, one of my dad's best friends died of a brain tumor. I didn't really know him that well, but my dad was pretty sad.

  2. Dear Bloggers,
The mood in Ida B's house when her mother is getting treated for cancer is that it is pretty somber, but it seems like they are spending a lot of time together. An example from the book is that when Ida B comes into her mother's bedroom and sits down on her bed, it seems like Ida B's mother tries to talk to her, but is pretty weak and can't really talk to her that well. I know this would make me sad to watch a family member go through, but so far I have been lucky enough that I have never had to watch that.

  3. Dear bloggin folks,
When Ida B comments that 'nothing' usually means more to worry about, I think she means that when someone says that nothing's wrong, it's the opposite of what they said; if someone says that, you should worry more. Wow, I basically just repeated what Ida B said... Oh well.

    Sincerely,
    BK0323 (that's right, I have a code name!)

  4. Alrighty, I didn't really finish my most recent blog,
She was referring to her mother having cancer, and her mother was trying to cover it up, but she couldn't ever since the treatments, and it actually was a lot to worry about.
A similar situation is if someone had a tumor in their pinky toe, and it was the size of pinnochio's nose; the person who had it would try to cover it up with a really big sock or something, but it still wouldn't be okay...

  5. BK,

Please be sure to respond appropriately to the questions posed to you. I know you well enough to realize that your response is less than your best effort. What you described as a similar situation to the book is not a realistic example, nor is it an indication of your true understanding of the novel. You are a very bright student who definitely has more insight to share than what you are offering. To receive full credit on this assignment, you will have to put forth your best effort.

  6. JO,

I absolutely agree with you when you express that you are lucky to not have had a family member go through a similar situation! You are also lucky to have such a close and caring family that if something like this did happen, your whole family would have a wonderful support system.

My aunt was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of this year. Although it was very heartbreaking to witness, her strength and positive attitude was very inspiring to me! I was touched when she asked me to go with her to one of her chemotherapy treatments this past summer and it was definitely a learning experience. There are a lot of families that deal with health issues on a day to day basis and it affects their lives tremendously.

My heart aches for Ida B and her family as I read through the novel, imagining the emotions she goes through as her mom struggles with her health. I can't help but think of the toll it takes on her mom and her dad as well. It definitely makes us realize the many simple blessings that we all experience each day!

  7. Dear Ida B readers,
The phrase "It's Nothing" in the book referse to when her mom and dad were talking about a docter apointment at the table during breakfast. I think another similar situation I think is when they were washing dishes and her mom and dad were just talking and Ida B wanted them to hurry up.

  8. Dear Ida B readers,
The mood in Ida B's house after the treatments was really Quite. At the time it was also really sad. The only time Ida felt happy was when her dad and her sat down together and he whispered a book to her. She would stand by her bad and her mother would talk to her. when her mother would get up for a while she would pick up the strans of hair that fell of her. She would put them in her keep sake bag. She kept the bag under her bed.

  9. Dear Ida B readers,
This time at school was differant from the first time because the teachers were nicer, the students were excited to see her and were nice to her, the teachers were nice and happy to see her, and Ms. Washington, here teacher, asked if she had a nickname she wanted to use. Her reaction this time was that she did what she had to do nothing more. She didn't talked unless she was asked a question. She did not want to make friends.

I agree I would not want to go through what Ida had to go through. I would be hart broken, sad , and would not want to do anything at all. I feel bad for Ida because of what she is going through. I beleive our house would go quiet. I don't know what I would do if that happened to me. I don't what to know what would happen either.

Ida's dad sold the end of Applewood land because he needed money to pay for Ida's mother's hospital treaments. Ida was mad when her dad told her this. She did not want to beleive it. I perdict the futur will bring les money for them because of less land. Ida probably will stay mad at him and maybe the land will be all gone in the futur.

  12. Dear Miss Steffen,
I am very sorry to hear that your aunt was diagnosed with cancer. She is very lucky to have a niece like you to help her through treatments! I am sure since at the time you were a grown adult that you knew, but if you were a little kid and your family kept a secret like that from you, how would you feel? I would feel pretty bad...

  13. Yo Folks,
What happened to the end of the Applewood land was that Ida B's father sold or rented it (I'm a little confused) to help pay for Ida B's mother's treatments. Ida B becomes a little angry that he did this, but I don't think Ida B understands that this will ultimately help her mother get better. I think it is really mean of Ida B to be mad that her father sold the land because it is no one's fault that it had to come to this. I think Ida B needs to understand that the world doesn't always revolve around her, especially when a family member has a serious illness.

    From,
    JO0523

P.S. I think Ida B would benefit from a sibling because then she might know that the world doesn't always revolve around her.

  21. Bloggers,

This time around at school Ida was depressed. The reason I think this is because she at reccesss would it on the steps at school. One of her teachers named Ms. Washington would come sit next to her and ask her if anyting she would like to talk about.Ithink that she is depressed of what is all going on because that is a lot for a little kid to handle.

  23. Dear bloggers,
The mood in Ida B's house after her mother's treatments is sad and hopefull. I say this because they are all sad about her mother getting the toomer and they hope that it will get better soon.
An example is when Ida B's dad tells Ida B that her mother is going to recieve new treatments that will take less of a physical tole on her mother, and that they should be hopeful that it works.

  24. What happened at the edge of the Applewood Land was that Ida B's dad rented out the land to gain some mula so that they could pay for Ida B's mother's treatments. JO0523, I agree that Ida B shouldn't be angry at her father for doing that. She should realize that it's the only way to afford their mother's treatments. I guess she's just so used to having that land and talking to the trees that she just couldn't let go of it. That was her only place to get away from the rest of the world, but she should be able to give it up for a while to help save her mother.

Great job on your blogs! You are being very descrtiptive and consistant on your blogs. I agree that her teachers were much nicer at Ida B's next time at school. I think everyone included her more, and presented a much friendlier environment. For example, her teacher Ms. Washington asked her what she would like to be called, and all of her class-mates were very happy to see her.

Keep up the great work everyone!

  26. bloggers,
I think that Ida would be more open to everyone's kindness at school if her mother didn't have cancer. I do agree that she was acting kind've depressed, but everyone at her school was very nice and I think she was only upset because of her mother having a toomer/cancer.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that Ida B's heart "hardened" because she was sad that her father rented out some of their land and that her mother was very ill with a fatal cancer. My heart would have "hardened" too if that happened to me.
A charecter from another novel that this is simillar to is Ponyboy Curtis from the Outsiders. I think this because Ponyboy had to run away from his home and his family because his friend stood up to some soc's in a fight, which ended in a fatal stabbing and murder charges. In the end of the novel, Ponyboy lost a friend and a family member; one in a fight, and the other in a burning church while trying to save someone.

  28. Dear fellow bloggers,
Ida is referring to in the first question is her mom has cancer. I would be petrified if one of my parents had cancer. One time my grandpa had a thing that could have turned into skin cancer so it isn't that bad but skin cancer can be very bad. My other grandpa had diabetes. When he died he had diabetes, pnemonia, and he had a stroke all at the same time.

Ida's mood for her mom's treatments is she really doesn't like it. A example is everytime her mom is starting to become herself again she has to get another treatment. That would stink having to have a mom where they couldn't do much. That would make me very depressed. I hope my parents never get cancer of diabetes or something like that.

  30. Hello People,
Ida's first day at school is different this time around because the teacher is really nice. Ida's reaction is she thought it was really nice but she was still mad so she tried to be mean. A girl named Claire even asked her to come play with them, but Ida was still to mean. I couldn't be that mean, I can't hold a grudge. How come girls hold grudges but boys can't?

  32. Dear Ida B a bloggers,
What Ida B is referring to on "It's nothing" she's talking about how her mom got lumps on her and she had to get a bunch of treatments and her parents always say it fine and don't worry about it. Something similar that's happened in my family is that my grandpa got something and had to get surgery one year and everyone thought he was going to be all right, but then the next year he got it again and he eventually died.

  33. Dear Friends,
Well the mood in Ida B's home is very disheartening after her mom's treatments because her mom is very tired and sick after she gets her treatments. Also her mom wouldn't make her dinner or she wouldn't ask her questions anymore and she rarely wanted company. The mood in the house is also very boring because no one would play with her because daddy would be working on bills or mama would be in bed resting.

  34. Dear BoA (Bloggers of America),
Well Ida B's experience to school this time is different than the last time because her friends in her grade are nicer and care for her more this time and also her teacher wants Ida to be happy so she's really nice and doesn't make Ida feel uncomfortable. The reaction to Ida B this time she went to school is that she's still mad about what happened at home so she's trying to be as mean as possible. Even though she knows they're trying to be nice her heart is still to hard to let her do that.

When she got home her mom and dad both asked her how her day was and and she told them both the same thing, but it had nothing to do with reading the book today at school. When it was super time she asked if she could be excused but her mom and dad told her that she should finnish eating first, but then Ida must of thought that it would be a good time to tell her parents about her reading in school. Her mom seemed very joyful about this and almost like she cared more about Ida B now.
